Nijo Castle is also the home of one of the neatest things I’ve seen in any historical monument: the Nightingale Floors. When you enter the main building, the floors squeak in a particularly musical way. They were designed so that the building would be impossible to sneak into. And when a large group moves through the hallways, the floors sound like a group of singing nightingales.
